Downtown Development
|
Two areas that are seeing a rebirth in Danville are the Historic Downtown and Tobacco Warehouse Districts. Main Street, which runs straight through the center of Downtown, offers a variety of businesses and restaurants. Specialty shops such as The Invitation Destination, Rippeās, and Riverland Music have made their home in historic buildings on this street.
The Tobacco Warehouse District has flourished over the past several years. With investments in projects such as laying down fiber optics (nDanville Fiber Optic Network), providing free public Wi-Fi, creating the River Walk Trail, and the Continuation of the Crossing Master Plan, this district is now the home to new industries, entertainment, and residential housing.

The Carrington Pavilion (an outdoor amphitheater) and the Danville Science Center, which are both located at The Crossing at the Dan, were among the first renovations to attract people of all ages to this district. The Continuation of the Crossing Master Plan shows exciting plans for this area in the near future. Included are plans to expand River Walk Trail, which currently is a scenic, seven and a half mile, multi-use trail located along the Dan River, and plans for a large-format theater.
Take a short walk down the street from the Crossing at the Dan, along a cobblestone road, and you will see old tobacco warehouses renovated into loft apartments and condos. Also located on this road and the surrounding blocks are new businesses that have moved into the area. These businesses are renovating old, historic properties to inhabit their new, innovative services.
